“The Hidden Mothers and Earthly Delights”

On exhibit September 27 – October 29

A love for our animal companions and gifts from the earth are the inspiration behind this delightful photography exhibit brought to us by artists Becky Savell, Karin Johansson, and Leslie Robertson.

"Earthly Delights"

Becky Savell describes her photographs of vegetables and fruits as "portraits" inviting the viewer to regard the beauty and dignity of our food and honors those who work in agriculture.

The series featured in this exhibit include "On White", "Roped", "Noir", and "On Satin".

Becky Savell is an award-winning photographer, producer, and curator living in southern California.  She has exhibited as a fine artist and has worked commercially, domestically and abroad, since the early 1980's.  She is a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Moorpark College, Moorpark, CA where she studied with John Gray and continues to serve on the Board of Advisors in the Photography Department.  As Commissioner on the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Commission, Becky continues to help facilitate arts and education in her community.  Her photographs have been featured at the Art Museum of Santa Paula Art About Agriculture Exhibit consecutively for several years and was awarded Best of Show in 2022.  Her current project featuring artists from Ventura County and Oaxaca, Mexico is a collaborative art exhibit launching in 2024.

"The Hidden Mothers"

Karin Johansson is a Swedish photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally along with collaborator Leslie Robertson.  As partners in Heavenly Creatures Photography, they work as animal advocates primarily photographing rescue and shelter dogs by means of classic portraiture and techniques.

Karin and Leslie’s photography series is based upon the Victorian practice of cloaking a parent while photographing a child, and is a tribute to those who rescue and care for abandoned animals.

The growing number of undesirable, abused, and discarded dogs in Los Angeles is a crisis that motivates Karin and Leslie to utilize their talents to increase awareness and mobilize change.  Together, they are further motivated by the desire to reveal the innate nobility and true beauty of these animals in order to help them find their forever homes. Karin and Leslie also collaborate on special art projects inspired by historical images and the intriguing relationships between animals and people.

Karin Johansson is a Photography Instructor on staff at Moorpark College, Moorpark, CA and received an MFA in Photography at California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from Gothenburg University in Sweden. Leslie Robertson is a graduate of Moorpark College.
