"Fresh Take: Paintings of Hidden San Diego”

On exhibit February 1 – February 26

Plein air artists Danny Griego and Margaret Larlham are exhibiting together for the month of February:                                                                                                                                "This exhibition will depict sites of San Diego that normally do not get a second look; sites that have artistic beauty as seen through our eyes.”

Please plan to visit this February exhibit and discover, for yourself, the unexpected beauty in overlooked locations hidden throughout San Diego. 

Danny Griego: “Most of my inspiration stems from how landscapes integrate with urban settings. I find great interest in how sturdy man-made structures coexist with organic forms of nature. Alleys, freeway bridges, on-and-off ramps, shabby buildings, construction sites and subjects that don’t get a lot of attention are of particular interest to me. Things that evoke a bygone era, things that have a sense of history because it has been around for a while. I get a good charge out of depicting the nooks and crannies of ignored subjects that don’t get a second look from the public. Through use of color and paint application I hope to convey to the viewer that these places deserve another look. I like to go where concrete, wood and steel meet nature.”

Margaret Larlham: "I am in a landscape and the landscape is in me. When painting what I see I “become” a tree in the landscape. My sound is breath and rustle of the pastel stick or brush on surface of paper or canvas. I am interested in investigating more deeply the places familiar to me and also sharpening my responsiveness to the special character of new places I encounter along the way. I love the wild places of America, Africa and Europe. Direct painting is critical. If I don’t go out to paint every day, wherever I am, I get a bit cranky with myself – so I try to avoid that for everyone’s peace of mind! For larger studio paintings I use references of plein air sketches, photographs, and personal experiences."
